Computational considerations for the processing of explanatory literal analogies and expressive metaphors

In a recent paper, Weiner (1984) provides a formal account of the factors which need to be included in any computer model which anticipates processing metaphorical language. Substantiation of this or any theoretic stance in reference to a linguistic phenomenon should be based on data culled from a variety of natural (real world) sources; texts provide one such source. An examination of metaphorical examples found in texts then, can exercise and be a source of previously unnoticed exceptions to a theory at a particular stage of its development as well as an incentive to its refinement.
