A simultaneous method for detection of radial deformation and axial displacement in transformer winding using UWB SAR imaging

Achieving efficient diagnostic methods for power transformers is essential considering the role they play in electrical networks as well as their cost. Mechanical displacements in transformer windings can be caused by short-circuit currents or mechanical forces during transportation. Finding a way to detect the occurrence of these deformations and displacements as well as their position in winding is a considerable point in substations specially while transformer is online. In this paper a novel method is presented based on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging to detect the axial displacement and radial deformation simultaneously, in a model transformer using UWB transceivers. By processing the received images in a computer program, the presence of radial deformation and the axial displacement can be detected accurately.
