REAL-TIME INCREMENTAL COORDINATION OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS USING TRANSYT-7F

This paper presents the simulation results of a study which attempts to model an approach to real-time control which is very similar to SCOOT. The procedure also utilizes the previous minute's signal timings as a seed for an incremental optimization routine which generates the new signal timings for the next minute without the need for a sophisticated offset transition algorithm. The results of this simulation experiment are demonstrated for a series of sample traffic scenarios with different peaking characteristics. These scenarios are first analyzed in terms of their expected Performance Index if an optimized fixed-time control plan is implemented. Subsequently, they are analyzed in terms of the expected Performance Index, if the new incremental optimization routine is applied.
