The Older Pedestrian

Dr. Hoxie Most persons must be able to walk to maintain an independent lifestyle. Yet relatively little is known about the abilities, requirements, and problems of older pedestrians. In this discussion, we present a case that illustrates the dangers elderly pedestrians can experience. This is followed by discussions of the walking requirements and problems encountered by elderly persons as they perform their daily activities, and the relationship between walking speeds and pedestrian safety. We conclude with a discussion by a city traffic engineer who suggests how the special needs of elderly pedestrians can be addressed.
