Detection of Magnetic Particles Using Induction-Balance Microsensor Based on Non-Spiral Planar Microcoils

The emerging field of micro-level biosensors paves the way for specific and accurate sensing of target molecules. In this work, a novel biosensor using non-spiral planar microcoils is presented for detecting magnetic microparticles. The magnetic particles belong to a label or marker assisted method of pathogen detection in clinical diagnostics. Non-spiral planar microcoils are arranged in an induction-balance set up to sense the microparticles. The coil sensor is fabricated using a single mask level lithography with one level of metal interconnections. The output voltage at the receiving coil is measured in the presence and absence of the microparticles. The proposed coil sensor geometry showcases better performance compared to existing planar coil biosensor configurations.
