Practical Patching for Efficient Bandwidth Sharing in VOD Systems

Recursive patching shares existing video streams recursively with asynchronous clients for efficient multicast in large-scale video-on-demand systems (VOD). In this paper, we propose Practical Patching that removes useless data included in transition streams of Recursive Patching. Practical Patching expands ongoing transition streams dynamically when a new request actually arrives at the server. We evaluate the performance of the proposed Practical Patching technique by a simulation study in terms of service latency and defection rate. Simulation result shows us that the proposed technique is much better than that of recursive patching.
