Temperature Compensation Methods for Elastic Wave Based SHM

The introduction to Structural Health Monitoring system based on anomalies of propagating elastic waves was presented. It was underlined that in spite of great potential for on-line inspection of structures by array of piezoelectric sensors some challenges arise. The main problem is that anomalies of registered signals of propagating waves come not only from defects but are also caused by temperature changes. In order to tackle this problem strategy for compensation of the temperature effect was developed. In comparison to other available compensation methods, the proposed Equivalent Wave Method is operating in frequency domain and utilises Rayleigh–Lamb thermal coefficient. The method was validated experimentally by using array of piezoelectric sensors and scanning laser vibrometer. It was shown that the proposed signal processing improved considerably damage localisation capabilities.
