Hilbert-Huang transform and its application in electric power system

The Hilbert-Huang transform is a new theory first developed by Huang at the end of the 20th century for analysing nonlinear and unstable signals. The key part of the method is the 'empirical mode decomposition' method with which any complicated data set can be decomposed into a finite and often small number of 'intrinsic mode functions'.This decomposition method is selfadaptive with high efficiency.Since the decomposition is based on the local signal characteristics,it is very applicable in analyzing nonlinear unstable signals with frequency varying with time.It has already been used in nonlinear research fields. This paper also presents the Hilbert-Huang Transform and its problems. Its applications in electric power system and future trend development are summarized.
