Psychological Aspects of the Organism Under Stress: Part II Regulatory Devices of the EGO Under Major Stress

The homeostatic regulatory function of the ego was discussed in Part One of this paper.l Emphasis was placed on the regulatory devices of everyday life which are employed by the ego in coping with minor disturbances of homeostasis. Essentially, these are “normal” minor emergency devices. The failure of these “normal” devices under conditions of major stress necessitates the employment of increasingly radical and costly expedients.
