Marine fouling causes a lot of serious problems around the world. Understanding the Ecological characteristics of fouling organisms and the succession process of fouling communities is the essential prerequisite for preventing fouling. This paper deals with the investigation methods and the ecological characteristics of the fouling communities in the South China Sea including species composition, the horizontal and vertical distribution of fouling organisms and the seasonal change of their abundance. Further work about the application of the ecological mathematics modeling and the contribution of marine fouling to Restoration Ecology are also discussed in this paper.
