Uncomfortable Adaptation and Mashed Convergence: The Evolution of Interactive Applications

In this position paper we look at examples of the adaptation of software applications and services in both research and production contexts. We focus on the ways in which software adaptations are precipitated or enacted by endusers, and we address ways in which the internet is shifting the balance even more towards user adaptation. We further ask: how can/should we involve a greater number and diversity of people directly in making small changes to such Internet-provided capabilities? Our position paper begins with observations about the gaps between the application programming interfaces (APIs) and the actual adaptation of the applications. We then look at selected examples in adapting existing applications and services. We consider our own recent work in this area, and conclude with a set of issues in the area of "application end-user interfaces" as a complement to existing APIs. Author Keywords
