Strain gage measurements in the new MAN/S50MC?C engine on the test bed at shipyard Split

The new MAN B&W 6S50MC-C engine was subjected to wide range of strain gage measurements during the test bed at shipyard Split. Stress measurements during the bearing caps tightening (static loads) showed amounts of max. 66 MPa, depending on gage location and orientation. All these stresses are far under the allowable stress and yield strength. Dynamic measured stress variations showed stress ranges of not more than 26 MPa, which means max. stress amplitudes of +-13 MPa, depending on gage location and orientation. All measurements have been successful and stresses at all critical bearing locations are not expected to cause significant damage within the predicted life of the structure.
