Background Characteristics of 456 Gifted Students

The following is a description of the background characteristics of 456 children and youth selected from those who qualified for and who attended one or more sessions of a summer program for the gifted between 1972 and 1975. No geographic, racial or other restrictions were imposed in the selection of students for the program. A large number of states and the three broad racial groupings were represented: however, the largest number of students were from three southeastern states and were caucasian. Since support for the program from which the subjects were drawn is derived largely from tuition, the average socio-economic level of the families involved may be higher than would be the case if fees were not charged. This may be somewhat equalized, however, by the fact that qualified children from low socio-economic families have often been provided assistance by interested civic groups.
