Floor response spectra for seismic analysis and design of subsystem such as equipment, or piping located in a building are usually calculated without considering dynamic interaction between main structure and subsystem. This study describes the analytic method in which response spectra can be obtained through seismic analysis considering equipment-structure interaction in frequency and time domain. Seismic response of the equipment by frequency domain method is based on a dynamic substructure method in which the equipment-structure system is partitioned into the single-degree-of-freedom system representing the equipment and the equipment support impedance representing the dynamic characteristics of the structure at the equipment support. Seismic response of the equipment by time domain method is obtained by mode superposition method for efficiency. A three-storied shear wall structure is selected for identifying the effectiveness of the proposed procedures in frequency and time domain. Response spectral values obtained through newly developed codes for frequency and time domain analysis procedures are compared into the entire frequency range. Analysis result and applicability of the two analysis procedure are also discussed as conclusion.
