SisECO: Design of an echo-canceling IC for base band modems

This paper presents the design of SisECO, an echo-cancelling integrated circuit for ISDN modems operating in base band. The FIR adaptative filtering is the main function of the chip. The adaptation algorithm used is the LMS (Least Mean Square) type. The paper approaches the echo cancelling problem and presents the whole design flow, including the architecture definition, the VHDL description (used to validate the architecture), the ISDN communication system simulation with modems using SisECO (to validate its operation) and the physical design of the modules of the chip. The focus of the paper is the physical design of the chip, showing layouts and SPICE simulations. The expected operation frequency for SisECO is 1 Mbaud (2 Mbit/s data rate).
