Methanol to fuels routes: the achievements and remaining problems

Abstract This review examines the need to supplement conventional transport fuels with synthetic fuels, and identifies the methanol conversion route as the best of the available processes. Various methanol conversion routes are discussed, and the combination of the Mobil MTO and MOGD processes is identified as the state of the art in synfuels production. Methanol conversion processes should however be seen as a bridging exercise in the introduction of methanol as a fuel in its own right.
