Demands of the bigger system: Business and industry leaders should consider themselves only group leaders in the major operation

Chester Brown of Allied Chemical Corp. stepped forth in New York on the night of Oct. 21 to receive the Chemical Industry Medal. He also stepped forth in presenting some views that deserve action. He declared that businessmen ought to seek more involvement in the problems of the nation's population. "The good of every businessman is necessarily interwoven with the social health of his community," said Mr. Brown, who went on to press the businessman to recognize decayed housing, congested traffic, crime, educational inequality, and urban blight as his concern. Mr. Brown was not only idealistic, he was practical, for he pointed out dollars-and-cents reasons for the businessman's becoming involved in his local situation.
