STRUCTURE, CONDUCT AND PERFORMANCE IN THE INTERNATIONAL CHAIN OF JEPARA-MADE FURNITURE 1

This study contributes to the ongoing discussion within public, private and nongovernmental realms on the development opportunities of international supply chains. It does so through examining structure, conduct and performance at the level of individual supply chain members in developing countries. The international supply chain that is subject to analysis in this study is that of tropical hardwood furniture that is made in Jepara, a district on the North coast of Central Java, Indonesia, and sold in numerous markets in Europe, the United States, Australia, and others. The chain is strongly characterised by ‘1 tier’, - and ‘2 tier’-types of supply chains indicating participation of medium,- and small,-scale manufacturing enterprises in furniture export production. The upstream and downstream supply chain members are linked to each other by (sub)contract relationships.
