This textbook covers all areas of automotive research and considers the state of the art and development in motor vehicles. It was orginally published in German and translated into English by P L Albrecht. The chapters provide: a basic introduction to mobility; vehicle requirements and conflicting goals; vehicle physics; general design; powerplants (Otto-cycle and diesel engines, supercharging, drivetrain, all-wheel drive / braking / traction control, auxiliary devices, two-stroke engines, alternative fuels); the vehicle body, its interior and safety (crashworthiness, impact testing, simulation); vehicle suspension (brakes, tyres, damping and fuel system), electrical components and systems (including vehicle lighting, sensors, systems technology, batteries, multimedia systems, electromagnetic compatibility); materials / manufacturing methods; the product creation process (including quality control); traffic and the motor vehicle; and the future.
