Novel Balancing Approach for Multilevel Diode Clamped Converters in Medium Voltage Hybrid STATCOM Application

The paper proposes a new modulation technique developed for multilevel diode clamped converters (DCC) aimed to guarantee the equalization of the DC-Link voltages without resolving to the common mode voltage injection. The proportional balancing technique is especially suited for STATCOM applications where it is able to compensate for the voltage drift that a conventional modulation approach would introduce, without appreciably deteriorating the system efficiency. The novel modulation strategy, presented with a generalized approach for an $\pmb{N}$-level $\pmb{M}$-phase converter, can be applied also in presence of a neutral connection and has been numerically validated with reference to a four-wire MV network.
