A Diesel Engine for Light Duty Applications

The design of a naturally aspirated diesel engine for automotive and light-duty applications is described. The engine produces 55 brake horsepower at 4500 rpm and is 10 percent lighter, 9.4 mm less in height, 25.0 mm shorter, and significantly less noisy than a currently available heavier duty unit rated at 4000 rpm. The engine is capable of meeting the 1977 Federal standards for hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and smoke emissions.
