Current state of computational bluff body aerodynamics

Abstract After recalling standard approaches to the modelling of the unresolved part of a turbulent flow, i. e. Reynolds Stresses or Subgrid Scale Stresses, the underlying hypotheses of these models are recalled and shown to be particularly critical in the Bluff Body Aerodynamics area. Performances of theses models are analysed on recent applications to a set of test cases pertinent to BBA, together with new ideas to drive back the limits imposed by model hypotheses. Although one concludes that the following years will see a widespread of Second Moment Closures in CFD in general, BBA is probably a specific area where Large Eddy Simulation should be favoured.
