Real Time Brain-Computer Interface Based on Alpha Rhythms in Electroencephalography

A Brain-computer interface system based on LabVIEW platform is developed, which includes signal processing, feature extraction and pattern classification, for real time cursor control using EEG.The system only requires two electrode O1,and O2 for recording the EEG signal on the scalp to extract the alpha rhythms. The cursor movement in two-dimensional space can be controlled rapidly and reliably by linear discriminant to judge the lasting time between the subject closing eyes and another control command sent out.The developed BCI system operates in asynchronous mode and can output a command within 3.6~5.4 s,which is more practical than the existing alpha rhythms based BCI systems. The experimental results indicate that the subjects without pre-training can complete the task of cursor movement control accurately via the developed BCI system.
