Cytology of West Himalayan Labiate: Tribe Ocimoideae

The tribe Ocimoideae consists of 14 genera of herbs and shrubs, chiefly distri buted in Tropical Africa. About 91 species are distributed in the Indian sub continent, of which 53 species are endemic to this region (Mukerjee 1940). Nearly 16 species are met in the West Himalayas, and 13 taxa falling in 5 genera have been investigated presently. The chromosome counts were made from meiotic studies in pollen mother cells using Carnoy's fluid. Voucher specimens are preserved in The Panjab University Herbarium at Chandigarh, India. Chromosome numbers, along with origin, voucher and ploidy level are summarized in Table 1.
