Oil slicks detection using GNSS-R

Global Navigation Satellite Systems' signals reflectometry, originally envisioned for ocean altimetry, has become a promising remote sensing technique. Among other applications, it has been proposed for ocean scatterometry for sea state determination. Most of the proposed scatterometry techniques have as a product an average sea state descriptor over the whole observed ocean region. However, a Delay-Doppler Map (DDM) measurement is actually collecting the scattered power in different points of the observed surface so it has been recently proposed to invert the DDM measurements in order to obtain the scattering coefficient (σ0) distribution over the observed surface. In this paper, this technique is applied to the numerical simulation of oil slicks detection.
