Q-switching of an Er:YAG laser using evanescent wave absorption in ethanol

We describe here a simple design of passive Q-switching of an Er:YAG-laser using the bleachable absorption of the evanescent EM wave at the interface between the reflecting surface of a high-refractive-index prism and strongly absorbing liquid, in this case ethanol.
