A device for the in situ determination of soil deformation modulus

The soil deformation modulus (K) is an important term in describing and defining the mechanical properties of soil for traction prediction purposes. Values of K determined in the field give results that account for soil surface effects and other field conditions. This paper describes a new device for in situ measurement of K values, the single wheel tester (SWT). The technique for using the SWT in the field and the preliminary results obtained are discussed.
