Modelling of Flexible Airport Pavements Subjected to Thermal Cracking

In this paper the Authors present the development of an evaluation method used for the analysis of flexible airport pavements subjected to thermal cracking. The model is based on the application of the finite element method and on experimental tests carried out to assess the rheological properties of bituminous binders at low service temperatures. Its validation was performed by considering the case of an airport which was recently subjected to structural rehabilitation. Critical cracking temperatures were evaluated by means of different methods thus providing a prediction of the actual performance in service
