Proposal of the Scalable Virtualized Home Gateway using Atomic Network Function Virtualization

Abstract Along with the network virtualization technique improvement, Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) gathers attentions. NFV provides a network equipment function by software on the commodity server per single virtual machine instead of preparing the dedicated network equipment. Regard of applying NFV into wide range, the Customer Premise Equipment Virtualization is proposed, which moves Home Gateway (HGW) in Customer Premise (CP) into the provider network and provides its function. HGW is a device which interconnects various home devices to the Internet. The HGW needs appropriate scalability depending on the fluctuation of the customer number also guarantees the communication between HGW and appliances connected to the Internet by allocating IP address appropriately. In this paper, we propose scalable virtualize Home Gateway (vHGW) by using Atomic NFV which divides a network equipment function into small function blocks to realize more flexible scalability and guarantee the communication. Compared to the convectional HGW virtualization method, evaluation results show the proposed method has more scalability according to the increase of subscribers.
