Large-Eddy Simulations of Turbulent Wake Flows

A numerical method for solving three-dimensional, time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using the large eddy simulation (LES) is briefly described. A new random flow generation technique (RFG) was used to provide the turbulent inflow boundary conditions. The combined LES-RFG procedure was applied to simulate the wake of flat plate and a ship model. The simulations of flat-plate wake were validated against the experimental data. In the case of a ship-wake (ship model 5415), reasonable results were obtained.
