A decomposition technique applied to the optimum control problem for interacting dynamic systems is used to generate an equivalent two level hierarchy of sub-problem. Application to the synthesis of controllers is discussed and an important special case for “slack” systems is indicated with an example relating conventional integral action control with coordination.
