Normal forms for fuzzy logic functions and their approximation ability

Abstract Aiming at developing theoretical backgrounds of fuzzy logic, we consider an MV-algebra of fuzzy logic functions. Two kinds of formulas regarded as disjunctive and conjunctive normal forms are introduced as a formal translation of IF–THEN rules. Their ability for an approximate representation of uniformly continuous functions are investigated. The problem of transformation of any formula of propositional fuzzy logic into either of the normal forms is discussed.
