A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR ACTIVE SAFETY IN ROAD TRAFFIC

Starting from a short review of the classical definition of traffic safety as given by Wilfert, 1966, a novel classification scheme for Active Safety in the form of a fault tree is being derived. The discussion will consider human factors implications of the new technical potential of artificial recognition of the vehicle's traffic environment. As a typical example of driver assistance systems Adaptive Cruise Control ACC will be described.
