Software architecture methodology for field operational test beds

The increasing complexity of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) makes their development and testing in situ a particularly demanding challenge. Test beds can provide vast soft- and hardware infrastructure to enable efficient support for the full development cycle. Despite many test beds emerging in recent years, very few have published a structured architecture development process, in many cases lacking a structured process to design test beds from a software developer's point of view. This paper outlines a tailored decomposition and synthesis approach for defining a rational, non-intuitive architecture for a test bed to contribute to a economical, flexible and future proof development and testing of ITS.
