Modeling hybrid electric HMMWV power system performance

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the US Army Tank and Automotive Command (TACOM) have sponsored the testing of two High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs) which were converted in 1996 from production mechanical drive configuration to hybrid electric drive architectures. This paper describes the performance modeling of these two hybrid electric HMMWV vehicles using simulation components derived from a standard vehicle performance toolbox and presents simulation output demonstrating the general behavior of these implementations of hybrid electric drive. These models are compared with preliminary test data from the manufacturers and show good agreement. Validation of these codes with more extensive testing in winter is expected to enhance the credibility of the dynamic modeling tools for predictive use on future combat vehicles.
