Impact of Large Scale Wind Power on System Adequacy in a Regional Power System with Weak Interconnections

This paper considers the impact of wind farms on power system adequacy. The impact is studied using data from a real life regional power system with a predicted need for new generation to meet future demand. The question is if adding wind power to the system will be sufficient or if additional measures must be taken. The paper concludes that wind power contributes to reducing the loss of load probability, but the positive effect is less pronounced at high wind penetration. Adding a storage component to the wind farms provides for enhanced controllability and load carrying capability.
