On acceleration methods for approximating matrix functions

The recent interest in accelerating the numerical approximation of the matrix exponential inspired this work. Our main result is that some recently developed acceleration procedures may be restated as preconditioning techniques for the partial fraction expansion form of an approximating rational function. These new results allow us to devise a-priori strategies to select the associated acceleration parameters and the numerical results show the effectiveness of the choice.
