The energy recovery ventilator(ERV) has become a more important consideration for hot/humid and cold/dry climates. In order to ensure the reliable performance of the ERV, operating strategies should be suggested on the basis of climate conditions. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the heat recovery efficiency and energy savings of an ERV and to make some operating suggestions. The temperature, moisture, and enthalpy transfer efficiencies of an ERV were measured during summer, autumn, and winter. Based on the results, we analyze the characteristics of heat transfer efficiencies with the variation of outdoor climate conditions. The energy saving effects were also evaluated by comparing with a ventilator without a heat exchange core. In summer condition, the bypass mode operation seems more feasible in case that the heat gain from the supply fan is lager than the heat transfer from the exhaust air. In winter condition, the heat-transfer mode seems appropriate due to constant high heat recovery efficiencies. By operating the heat recovery ventilator, about 5% and 10% of the energy required for conditioning fresh air could be saved in summer and winter experiments, respectively.
