The role of formalised visual assessment in pavement management systems for paved roads in developing countries

In many developing countries most surfaced road pavement structures have thin bituminous surfacing. The structural state of pavements with thin surfacings can be assessed to a fair degree of accuracy from the visual condition alone. A cost-effective pavement management system, based on formalised visual assessment alone, can be particularly suitable for developing countries. Data is captured by means of comprehensive, easy to use, visual assessment form. Computer models are available for the analysis of the data to produce condition indices, priority lists, life cycle curves, rehabilitation measures and cost estimates.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828827.
