Fossa absorvente ou rudimentar aplicada ao saneamento rural: solução adequada ou alternativa precária?

The cesspools are still widely used for treatment and disposal of sewage in rural areas in Brazil, mostly because they are a simple, economical and popularly known solution. Although its use is often considered precarious, it is a system that ensures hygienic separation between people and their excreta and often becomes a practicable alternative when other technologies are inaccessible. However, some users report problems with their use, while many others have no difficulties. Therefore, it is necessary to question whether its implementation always implies an inadequate sanitation condition. Some requirements related to its constructive form, location and density should be detailed to reduce misfortune and risks of contamination, ensuring public and environmental health and making this alternative a proper solution for specific socio and environmental conditions.
