Pathological Changes of the Inner Ear and Central Auditory Pathway in Diabetics

Pathogenesis of this impairment of hearing in diabetics is not fully understood and histopathologic studies on the inner ear of diabetics have been scanty.6.18.26.30.31 Factors related to the diabetic disorders have been thought to be duration of the disease," age of the patient," blood sugar level,29 blood pressures", toxic effects of unknown metabolic products," chronic disturbance of blood supply due to arteriosclerosis in the labyrinth'" and bleeding in the labyrinth or acoustic nerve.t? There are some reports denying the significance of these factors.!" and the occurrence of the hearing loss itself in diabetics."
