Tagging versus strict rate enforcement in ATM networks

The authors address some issues associated with the use of traffic-violation-tagging in ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) networks. The compatibility of tagging with AAL (ATM adaptation layer) cell loss priority marking is discussed. Selective-discarding algorithm behavior is shown to be sensitive to tagged-traffic load, which implies a conservative strategy for the specification of these algorithms. It is pointed out that the QOS (quality of service) offered to tagged traffic cannot be specified.<<ETX>>
