A Review of the Statistical Theory of Signal Detection

This paper reviews some of the techniques of signal detection theory and discusses their use in the analysis of gravitational wave data. Topics covered include the classical theory of hypothesis testing, detection of known signals in white noise, maximum likelihood estimation of unknown parameters, the application of nonlinear filtering in signal detection and the use of pre-whitening filters to handle correlated noise.
