A traffic model with inter-system handovers for seamless mobile integrated networks

A traffic model of mobile integrated networks with hierarchical cellular coverages is presented. The model characterizes the traffic overflow from terrestrial cells to overlying satellite spots, accounting for inter-system handovers from the terrestrial component to the satellite one. In order to provide a uniform service quality degree over the whole covered area, a priority policy is adopted in the satellite resource management. Performance measures of the integrated system are derived in terms of blocking probability, forced termination probability and probability of non-completed call. Results are presented in terms of these performance measures at various values of spatial traffic density parameters. The possible model exploitation for the design of the integrated system is also pointed out.
