Cost-effective technologies evaluation at the Hanford Site: Outdoor hand geometry testing

The Westinghouse Hanford Company Security Applications Center performed an outdoor evaluation of the Recognition Systems, Inc., ID3D-S (ID3D-S) Hand Geometry personnel identifier on behalf of the US Department of Energy Richland Field Office in fiscal year 1991. Minor modifications of the ID3D-S allowed a unit designed for indoor use to be used on a building exterior. This report outlines the findings during the one-year evaluation. Overall performance of the ID3D-R was excellent in all but the most severe weather conditions. The average up time for the test unit was 96.4% during the test period. The ID3D-S`s outdoor performance proved the ID3D-S is an acceptable alternative to key and cipher-type exterior door control. Because no distribution of keys or codes is required, it has an advantage over using keys, cipher locks, and key card systems. However, the ID3D-S requires the addition of interior heat pads, seals on the exterior joints, and a drip shield for outdoor use. 2 refs., 3 figs.
