Godsspår Jönköping - Skåne

The Swedish railway transportation system possess substantial lack of capacity on most routs. At the same time the demand for rail transport are expected to grow and The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) believes that measures to increase the capacity are substance for the system to cope with the increased traffic. In addition, measures needs to be done for the Swedish rail transport system to overcome the quality problems which lies within the system today. One of the most important railway routs in Sweden is Sodra stambanan which extends between Stockholm and Malmo. Upon Sodra stambanan large amount of freight and passengers are transported and this railway link is of great importance for the Swedish transportation system. It’s busy of mixed traffic, which is different types of traffic that has different kind of requirements on the track, travel at different speed, got different vehicle characteristics and make stops at different places. Mixed traffic is an in-efficient way to operate which combined with high stress on a line causes an inefficient utilization of the schedule. Furthermore, this combination of mixed traffic and high stress levels on the line result in increased risk for transports with poor punctuality. More kilometers of track would increase the capacity of the Swedish railway network and accordingly alleviate the current lack of capacity. Even though The Swedish Transport Administration argue that the use of the existing system also is of great importance and should therefore be streamlined. Consequently, a measure for action is presented in this thesis, which includes both that a new railway link is being built and that different types of traffic is being separated and thereby providing an efficient capacity utilization. The purpose with this capacity enhancing measure is to alleviate the crowded Sodra stambanan, with the hope of a less operational sensitive rail link. The thesis is a case study based on a literature study, capacity calculations and The Swedish Transport Administrations own strategy for planning the Swedish transportation network – The Analysis of Measures (atgardsvalsstudien). This measure for action is not a complete or final solution, but more like a sugg¬estion from the authors of this thesis. The authors hope that The Swedish Transport Administrations will take this measure under consideration when they investigate the region between Jonkoping and Malmo for the Analysis of Measures they have been instructed by the Government to produce. The Analysis of Measures for Jonkoping-Malmo are developed in response to the building plans per a high speed rail line between these cities which are to connect Sweden with Europe. (Less)
