Layout planning in cellular manufacturing

Almost everyone has some experience of layout planning in terms of arranging facilities (furniture, appliances, and so forth) in the house or office. Recall how many times you have changed the arrangement of furniture in your study room or how many times you have changed the location of the television in your house. Every time you do it, knowingly or unknowingly you do some layout planning. If layout planning is so common and trivial, why have researchers bothered about this for so long and why has it been a subject of so many books and papers? The reason is that it is a common decision in a variety of situations but not a trivial one in all types of situation, as the cost of undoing it will differ significantly. For example, furniture in the house may be rearranged for a diminutive expenditure. On the other hand, rearrangement of machines in a manufacturing system could cost a fortune.
