Radio channel characterizations at 2.4 GHz in mine shaft environment

In this paper, narrowband and wideband radio channel measurements at 2.4 GHz have been carried out in a real mine shaft. Important parameters such as path loss and delay spread are presented and compared with that in underground tunnels. The waveguide effect has been observed in path loss. The distribution of Root-Mean-Square (RMS) delay spread and the relationship between RMS delay spread and Tx-Rx distance has been investigated. The number of multipath has also been studied. The results are helpful for designing shaft communication systems.
