Ultrasound generation from side wall of optical fibers

Ultrasound technique has been widely applied in various areas such as diagnostic applications, structure health monitoring, etc. Most advanced applications require novel ultrasonic transmitters, where fiber optic technique has been proved to be a great candidate due to its compact dimension, high frequency, and highly harsh environment survivability. Therefore, extensive research has been conducted on developing novel fiber optic ultrasound transmitters for the recent decades. This review paper will briefly review the history of the fiber optic ultrasound generation and then will focus on the ultrasound generation from the side wall of optical fibers. Several applications based on this technique will be discussed and the future of the technology will be previewed.
