Experimental analysis of a Fast Adaptive Composite-based grid expansion scheme for open boundary problems

Poisson’s equation on unbounded domains was solved with a hierarchical grid coarsening approach on the basis of Stephen F. McCormick’s Fast Adaptive Composite grid method. We were especially interested in the efficient interface treatment that is enabled by regular stencils. The error behavior of a second-order scheme was empirically analyzed for an exemplary setup from molecular dynamics. Comparisons with previous methods were also performed and showed that our approach is competitive. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
